After 1.5 years of "roughing it out" without one, we finally got a microwave and completed our kitchen! When we moved to TO last year, one of the first things we noticed in our rental apartment kitchen was that it had no microwave. We thought "What?! Who doesn't have one in the kitchen these days!?!?". We didn't get one last year because we were lazy, cheap and the "microwaves are not without their hazard" issue. When we moved to our new place and built the kitchen, we decided to go with a vent hood alone instead of the combo. Then laziness and the excitement of the no-microwave challenge kicked in. But we caved. We were pretty proud to have survived without one this long. But really, leftovers are not fun at all when you have to get all the pots and pans out. We are still going to try minimizing its use. So far, we have only used it once when T warmed up a Chinese bun for breakfast :)

Did you look into Steam Ovens? that's what we are going to be using for our kitchen.
I "survived" without a microwave for 25.5 years. Only when I moved to Nanaimo, did friends all chip in to buy me a microwave. I admit the convenience factor is great for warming food up, but also do recognize that it isn't used as frequently as some people might (seakrait). Oh, and ask him about heating his lunch up for 20 minutes instead of 2.
@Jaime: hadn't heard of steam ovens. We have our regular oven for baking needs. The microwave was really just for occasional quick heating-up cases.
@Terry: I heard that you didn't grow up with one. We could have gone longer without one, but T's cousin got it for us as a gift and we welcomed the convenience.
I have to add that we didn't totally live without microwaves. We use the ones at work to reheat our lunch of leftovers. We just didn't have one at home for the past year and a half.
